West Virginia uses 5-run 9th inning to force Game 7 against Kentucky ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

West Virginia gave Kentucky baseball fans a sequel to last season’s nightmare in Morgantown.

With the Wildcats just 3 precious outs away from advancing out of the Morgantown Regional and into the Super Regionals, the hosts said, in effect, not so fast. Kentucky carried a 9-6 lead into the top of the ninth, but West Virginia wouldn’t go away, scoring twice to get within a run before the unthinkable happened for the Wildcats.

Right-hander Oliver Boone balked in the tying run, and moments later Paul Schoenfeld connected on a 2-run home run to right that sent the home fans in Morgantown into a frenzy and sent Big Blue Nation into that recurring Morgantown nightmare from last year. The 1-out blast gave West Virginia an 11-9 lead that eventually became the final score when Kentucky couldn’t muster an answer in the bottom of the ninth.

Suddenly, the Wildcats (33-22) were banished to a Monday, winner-take-all rematch with the Mountaineers (42-15), the No. 16 national seed in the NCAA Tournament. The time and TV designation for Monday’s showdown have yet to be determined.

In a twist of irony, Kentucky, the No. 3 seed at the Morgantown Regional, beat regional host and top-seeded West Virginia by the same 11-9 score on Saturday, before the Mountaineers flipped that score and effectively flipped the script on Sunday night.

Here is the latest moment to forget for Kentucky baseball in Morgantown:

The ninth-inning rally was launched by West Virginia when Nile Adcock walked the bases loaded, setting Kentucky up for a disaster that did in fact happen.

It was a roller-coaster night in Morgantown from the beginning, with the Wildcats falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, taking a 7-6 lead in the fourth inning and adding 2 runs in the seventh to set up that 9-6 score going into the top of the ninth.

Jayce Tharnish and Tyler Bell belted solo home runs for Kentucky in that seventh inning to give the Wildcats a seemingly sturdy 3-run cushion. But apparently for Kentucky, no lead is safe in Morgantown during the NCAA Tournament.

Sunday night’s meltdown at least didn’t end Kentucky’s season like it did last year, when the Wildcats let a 12-7 lead evaporate in a 13-12 loss to the Mountaineers that ended UK’s season. This time around, Kentucky will have another shot on Monday to save its season and advance to the Super Regionals, whereas last year its season was over and done after that meltdown.

Kentucky now has no margin for error in a Monday, winner-take-all rematch with West Virginia. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the odds for the Wildcats and Mountaineers to come out on top in the Morgantown Regional:
