Even though Caleb Williams’ throw to Rome Odunze in OTAs is playing on loop in my mind, there is something that Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson said on Thursday that I can’t shake.
This quote, in reference to the offseason point of emphasis of improving the Bears quarterback’s completion percentage, has been sticking with me since yesterday:
“You get what you emphasize. That’s what I’ve learned in this industry. And ball security, takeaways, is something we emphasize. We’ll continue to emphasize it. That shows up. Completion percentage is something that we’re going to emphasize, and so what did they get when they came into the offensive meeting today? They got the chart of what was our completion percentage yesterday, who had drops, what did our scramble drill look like when those naturally occurred.
Those guys are really critical of themselves in drill settings, routes on air, where the ball placement is. We want to give these pass catchers, we have so many talented ones, opportunities to run after the catch, and so we’re being very critical on where we’re putting that football with them, and that’s something that we grade every day.”

I love that the Johnson and Williams have a relationship that is so strong that the head coach can send some strong words aimed at his quarterback and it not be an issue that causes tension.

Mandatory Credit: Mike Dinovo-Imagn ImagesCaleb Williams wanted to be pushed hard as a rookie, so the Bears responded by hiring a head coach who would do it with no hesitation. As a result, Williams saw his passing yardage and touchdowns tick up as a second-year player who led his team to a division title and a playoff win last season. But Johsnon wants more. So does Williams. Hence, I’m loving that Johnson continues to publicly challenge his quarterback to be better.
Ben Johnson continues to harp on the importance of Caleb Williams’ completion percentage
Colleague Patrick K. Flowers wrote last December that it was time to stop obsessing about Caleb Williams’ completion percentage. And I still very much vibe with that sentiment. Sometimes, folks get so carried away with something so granular that they lose sight of the forest in the trees. And if you allow yourself to go back to December 2025, you will definitely remember it happening in real time in the ongoing assessment of Williams’ development.

But with that being said, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is running it back and driving home the point that he wants to see his quarterback’s completion percentage get a boost.
Once again, Johnson threw out the 70 percent completion mark as a goal for Williams in 2026. Will it be hard? Of course. Is it impossible to attain? No, but it is worth pointing out that some of the all-time greats don’t have Pro Football Reference pages littered with 70 percent completion percentages. But the way I see it, Johnson believes in Williams’ abilities so much that he thinks his quarterback CAN reach that 70 percent completion milestone. If he didn’t, I don’t think Johnson would bother throwing it out there for public consumption. And that Caleb has a plan to hit Ben’s completion-rate goal makes me believe that the quarterback thinks he can do it.
So if we trust Ben, Ben believes in Caleb, and Caleb believes in himself, then shouldn’t we, in turn, believe in Caleb? Sure, that sounds like a roundabout way of thinking, but the logic seems sound.
Springtime OTA practices are a good time for players to hammer home the little things. And if Caleb Williams does enough in that regard, I think big things — such as being the team’s first 4,000-yard passer, first QB to throw for 30 scores, and hitting that elusive 70 percent completion rate — will come for him and this team.
