Just days after IPL chairman Arun Dhumal publicly dismissed concerns around ‘honey-trapping’ and described IPL 2026 as a ‘very clean tournament’, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has tightened its security protocols further.
The IPL’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has issued a fresh advisory to all franchises, warning players and support staff against possessing or using smart glasses, smart sunglasses and smart goggles equipped with communication and recording technology during matches.
According to documents accessed by Cricbuzz and details reported by The Indian Express, the advisory was circulated to franchises on May 18 as part of the BCCI’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security and integrity measures during the tournament.
Why has BCCI banned smart glasses?
The ACSU has flagged concerns that several technology companies are actively marketing smart eyewear products to IPL players and team personnel.
Unlike traditional sunglasses, these devices are equipped with advanced features including live-streaming capabilities, text messaging, audio and video calling functions, and internet connectivity through mobile data or Wi-Fi networks. The BCCI believes such devices could create security concerns inside restricted tournament zones.
Under IPL’s Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) regulations, smart glasses have now been categorised as both an “Audio/Video Recording Device” and a “Communication Device”.
As a result, their possession and usage have been completely prohibited inside restricted areas on match days. Players and support staff have been instructed to deposit these devices with designated Security Liaison Officers before entering PMOA zones, alongside their mobile phones and smartwatches. Disciplinary action and penalties under tournament regulations if players fail to do so.
