Day 129 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Who needs coffee when highlights from OTAs exist?
All it took was one 16-second clip to get me jacked up about the season ahead:You Love to see it ? pic.twitter.com/2NMnYAjaAb
— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) May 27, 2026 Colston Loveland put up 58 catches, 713 receiving yards, and six touchdowns as a rookie last season. But my favorite Loveland fun fact is that Bears quarterback Caleb Williams posted a 123.5 passer rating when targeting the University of Michigan product last season. Williams completed 71.6 percent of his passes intended for Loveland and averaged 8.9 yards per reception. Loveland might be listed as TE1 on the depth chart, but — for all intents and purposes — is WR1 in my eyes going into this season.CHECK OUT THE BN BEARS PODCAST: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
Because I thought you might be interested, here are Caleb Williams’ stats when targeting tight ends Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland in 2025: 87/128 (67.97%), 1,047 yards (8.1 yards/attempt), 8 touchdowns (6.3 TD%), 1 interception (0.8 INT%), and a 110.4 passer rating. I’ll take another year of that, please and thank you. It’s almost as if Kmet is too important to the offense to trade him away for a pick, as some have suggested. I have a good feeling that we are going to enjoy watching Coby Bryant play safety this season:No fly zone ? pic.twitter.com/fhQuiyGM5T
— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) May 27, 2026 It is nice to see Bryant in action (even if it is in a practice setting via a 10-second social media clip) at Halas Hall. But shout out to Twitter/X user @Keeegs2 for spotting Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson in the background. Some injury concerns popped up last week regarding Gordon and another soft-tissue issue. That he is at Halas Hall for OTAs is an encouraging development. Getting 15+ games of Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson would do wonders for my mental health (at least in terms of the anxiety that comes when thinking about the Bears defense). Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn ImagesThe battle between Luke Elkin and Beau Spencer at long snapper is one to watch. In addition to speed and accuracy, this is what Special Teams Coordinator Richard Hightower is watching for at this particular position:
“Those things for sure. Then you have to consider the way they work with the other two players (the kicker and holder) because that’s a team. Those three together in operation, you have to make sure that’s always flowing smoothly. Then you have to look at the punt piece of it too. That’s two guys, the punter and the long snapper. And if they can protect or not. A lot of guys can snap a ball, but not [all of them] can protect. That’s often the downfall of long snappers.”
As someone who grew up watching an era of Bears football where special teams play was valued at the highest level, I care far more about the long snapper competition than other fans who might not hold the third phase to as high a standard as I do. Admittedly, I’ve been spoiled by tremendously skilled long snappers such as Patrick Mannelly, Patrick Scales, and Scott Daly. The Bears have had a good run at this position. It would be nice to see it continue with Gardner or Elkin. Does anyone have a few bucks to throw around? I swear I’m good for it:Former Chicago Bears wide receiver D.J. — Chicago Tribune (@chicagotribune) May 27, 2026 In the latest twist on the Bears stadium front, reporting from Justin Lawrence (Crain’s Chicago Business) indicates Illinois lawmakers are willing to draft legislation to keep the team in Illinois. That is quite the change from the game plan to this point. This should be better for all parties involved. I was hoping the Bears’ involvement in the megaprojects bill could help the state as a whole. But if that wasn’t going to happen, then I’m glad that legislators are trying to get something done. I fear that this project will end up like so many other stadium projects: they say all the right things, but don’t follow through. We’ll see how the cookie crumbles in the coming days…FOLLOW BN BEARS ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook | Twitter | BlueSky
