A 25-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, both from Chula Vista, were killed when their vehicle veered off Interstate 8 and hit a tree in El Cajon, authorities reported Wednesday.
The crash occurred around 3:30 a.m. Monday. The man was driving a 2023 Jeep Wrangler westbound on I-8, west of Second Street, when the vehicle went down an embankment and caught fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, the agency reported. Their names have not yet been released.
The CHP is investigating the cause of the crash, and it is not yet known if drugs or alcohol were factors.
