American Cancer Society adds blood test to colorectal cancer screening options ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The American Cancer Society is updating its guidelines for colorectal cancer screening to include a blood-based test.

NBC News says the blood test, which is called Shield, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2024. The test detects DNA fragments released by cancerous tumors.

Colonoscopies and stool-based tests are still more likely to catch issues, but the blood test offers a new alternative. The cancer society recommends it only for people who can’t or won’t undergo colonoscopies or stool tests.

Experts say offering more choices is critical in getting patients to test for the highly-preventable disease.

More than 20 million eligible Americans have not been screened for colon cancer.
