Hey, it only took a ten-game losing streak!
I kid. We already knew that Craig Counsell was not the type of manager to unleash a Lou Piniella-like explosion, and his steady nature undoubtedly helps the Cubs through rough times more than it hurts. But we fans are humans, and we can’t help but want to feel like the players and the coaches and the manager are as burned up on the inside by what has been happening as we are.
And as far as Counsell goes, I think a very calm and reserved ejection, combined with some mildly exasperated post-game comments, is about as frustrated as he’ll ever show. He’s there.
First, there was the ejection last night, which was the first time this year Counsell has gotten the boot:
Kevin Alcantara challenges the call, he is ruled to have swung by the 1B umpire, Craig Counsell is confused as to what happened and gets ejected.#Cubs pic.twitter.com/wr3S4s38em
— Carter Lowe (@cjlowebadgers) May 27, 2026Craig Counsell has been ejected in the 9th inning arguing with the 1B ump who ruled Alcantara went around on his swing as Alcantara tapped his helmet to challenge the 3-2 strike call.Counsell appeared upset the 1B ump made that call without the home plate ump signaling down to him for a ruling.
— Meghan Montemurro (@mmontemurro.bsky.social) 2026-05-27T01:11:31.163ZNot the wildest ejection you’ll see – and maybe a bit of a quick “just throw me out” situation – but at least there’s a little life? IT’S THE TURNING POINT!!!
As for the frustration, here’s what Counsell had to say about the team’s production right now, and you can judge for yourself in the video that follows what he might’ve been feeling as he said it. Sure had a frustrated vibe to me:
“Someone’s just got to step up and get hits in those spots, there’s not much more to say than that. You’ve got to conduct a big-league at-bat. It’s the at-bats you want, those are the at-bats you want to have during the course of a game, and you’ve got to deliver. That’s the name of the game. We’re kind of having the same inning over and over again, and it’s about delivering in those situations. Until we do, we’re going to be talking about the same thing ….
“It doesn’t matter what they’re doing [regarding pressing]. Your job is to deliver. You don’t deliver every time, but we’ve got to have some level of production. Pressing? I don’t know. I’m not sure what the answer is to that. I think the answer is, it’s a big-league at-bat with men on base. It’s the at-bat you want in the game. It’s the at-bat you can make a difference for your team. It’s the at-bat you can flip the score of a game, flip the course of a game, and it’s time for us to deliver.”
