Are the Cubs again cursed by a ‘Billy Goat'? Some fans think so ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Chicago Cubs fans may have thought the “Curse of the Billy Goat” was exorcised in 2016, but has the superstition made a return?

After posting a pair of 10-game winning streaks earlier this season, the Cubs are rapidly heading in the other direction, having lost 10 games in a row and in the process becoming just the second MLB team in history to pull that feat off.

They’ve also dropped into last place in the National League Central, and have left fans bewildered with their struggles at the plate and on the mound.

Some fans have even been left wondering if a new “curse” has been placed on the team.

As it turns out, something else happened on the last day the Cubs won a game. Sam Sianis, whose family operates the famed Billy Goat Tavern franchise in the city, passed away at a Chicago hospital on May 15 at the age of 91, the same date that the Cubs beat the White Sox in the first game of the Crosstown Classic series at Rate Field.

Since that date, the Cubs haven’t won a game.

Even the Billy Goat Tavern has posted a reference to the idea in recent days.

The “Curse of the Billy Goat” is forever etched into the brains of Cubs fans thanks to Sianis’ uncle William, who allegedly put the curse on the team when he was ejected from Wrigley Field along with his pet goat Murphy during the 1945 World Series against the Detroit Tigers.

The legend goes that William Sianis said the Cubs “ain’t gonna win no more” as he was taken from the ballpark, and that’s pretty much what happened for the next 71 years, as the Cubs were held without a National League pennant or a World Series title.

The Sianis family famously kept trying to reverse the curse on the team, including during the Cubs’ playoff runs in 1984, 1989 and 2003, but nothing seemed to work, and it took the magic of Anthony Rizzo and company to finally break that curse in 2016 when the Cubs won their first title in 108 years.

It feels unlikely that the Cubs will lose every single game for the rest of eternity, but it may feel that way to fans as they prepare for Wednesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, set for 5:40 p.m. at PNC Park.
