ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Have you seen the logs and branches built up along the Court Street Dam in downtown Rochester? Parts of the Genesee River are densely lined with trees, and when those trees fall or die, they can create a log jam.
A News10NBC viewer named Lisa writes: “I have a question: Why are there so many tree logs/timber debris stuck at the top of the downtown waterfall by Dinosaur BBQ/The Nathaniel Apt. Bldg.? It has been getting more and more congested. Can’t a crane remove them? Or the water slowed so chainsaws can be applied to remove them that way? They are all piled up there. Is this just a debris build-up, or is this some kind of last-ditch safety net of sorts if someone falls in and they would have something to grab onto before going over those little falls and then on to and over the high falls at High Falls?”
News10NBC’s Emily Putnam went to the Court Street Bridge to check it out. A representative from the City of Rochester says the city’s Department of Operations cleans up the debris each year when the water is low. The city says it works with RG&E to lower the water level, and downtown bridges close for the cleanup.
The New York State Canal Corporation also works to slow the flow. During a cleanup, a crane lifts up the logs, then the wood is chipped and mulched through the city’s Give Back Program.
News10NBC spoke with a man who has lived in Rochester on the river for 15 years and said he has never seen the log jam this bad. When we asked the city if there are any cleanups scheduled, the city could not confirm any cleanups to address the buildup of debris in the water.
In March, Rochester City Council approved a $600,000 proposal to hire a vendor to design a system that aims to stop tree buildup from happening in the future. The approved proposal is called the Genesee River Debris Mitigation Assessment, and it includes a review of the debris as well as a design to prevent log jams. News10NBC is working to learn if a vendor has been selected for that project.
