The Indian women’s team are all set to play their last three T20Is, before the final showdown at the T20 World Cup 2026, kickstarts. And truth be told, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side has a few boxes to tick, to be called serious contenders to lift the trophy — their first-ever. Yes, the team lifted the 50-over World Cup in November last year, but this is a different format, and concerns are real here.
The setbacks before the World Cup
The South Africa series was a big giveaway in many ways. The team lost 1-4 over there, and plethora of weaknesses were exposed, which could be detrimental in how the WC shapes for the team.
Inconsistency in top order: Let us just stick to the SA series for now, and the top 3 batters could not perform well for team in unison. In the 1st match, Smriti Mandhana had a hard time, could only score 13 in 14; In the 2nd at Durban, Mandhana and Jemimah failed badly. In Jo’burg Jemi got a golden duck. 4th game saw Shafali score 9 in 9, while in the last, entire top 3 flopped.
Poor-pace attack: Just imagine, in a series where Renuka Thakur — with 2 wickets in 4 matches was the best pacer for India, then how bad the others were. She averaged 64, while Arundhati Reddy averaged 123, and Kranti Gaud averaged 84. And all these girls are in India’s squad for the World Cup.
Absence of Amanjot Kaur: Believe it or not, but fast-bowling all-rounders bring a lot to the team. Amanjot, who was among the wickets in the World Cup and scored crucial runs down the order, won’t be there. Her replacement — Kashvee Gautam too suffered an injury, and is out of the World Cup. There is no one to step up there.

Give Anushka Sharma game time: As discussed above, the team is undergoing serious pace concerns. They have picked Nandni Sharma in the team — who was impressive for DC this year in WPL, and even picked hat-trick. If she is worth her salt, play her, put her under pressure, and let her grow. She just cannot be thrown into the World Cup directly.
Decide, whether to go spin or pace heavy: The skipper needs to be very clear, if she wants to go with an additional pacer, or reduce one; that department is clearly not working. So it might just be worth considering, if they get in someone like Radha Yadav as an extra spin option, while going with two pacers only.
Improve catching, please: How can catching not be on the agenda. In the South Africa series, the drops started in the very first match itself. As the opposition was chasing 158, Renuka dropped one, while Anushka Sharma dropped the other. In the next, Smriti Mandhana and Arundhati emerged as the culprits. In the 3rd, Smriti again, followed by Haramanpreet.

The trend continued in the last match too — and a total of 10 were dropped in the entire series. If the team cannot improve their catching, there is no way they can win.
Richa Ghosh up the order: One would notice, that in the middle-overs the boundaries cease to come. For that very reason, Richa needs to bat no.4 or no.5 depending on the situation. As for the role of a finisher, there is a certain Bharti Fulmali in the squad, who can come up with the big shots down the order.
She has an SR of 144, and having her up the order would really help the team, especially when they are batting first.
India squad: Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Bharti Fulmali, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (WK), Sree Charani, Yastika Bhatia (WK), Nandni Sharma, Arundhati Reddy, Renuka Thakur, Kranti Gaud, Shreyanka Patil, Radha Yadav.
