Glenn Phillips, forced to attend GT’s PC after Qualifier 1 loss to RCB, lashes out at ‘terrible question’ ...Middle East

Glenn Phillips wasn’t even a part of Gujarat Titans’ loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday. In fact, his last game for the franchise was over a month ago (April 20, 2026) and has featured in just 6 matches for the franchise in this season. Despite not being a part of the playing XI or the impact substitute list, Phillips was sent by GT to attend the post-match press conference. While the Kiwi all-rounder attempted to answer all the questions patiently, one particular query clearly angered him.

Phillips loses cool at ‘terrible question’

At the post-match press conference after RCB vs GT, IPL 2026 Qualifier 1, Phillips was asked if GT had given up on the run-chase after RCB posted a mammoth total of 254 runs. The GT all-rounder dubbed the question as a ‘silly’ one, and added that no professional cricketer would do so. Glenn said that GT approached the run-chase with the intention of going past the line, and unfortunately couldn’t do so because of different factors.

“That’s a silly question. That is a really silly question. No one goes in there waiting to go, ‘Oh, you know what? We’re just going to give up on this one.’ Why would we do that as professional cricketers? That’s a terrible question. We went out there, we gave it everything. Unfortunately, when you’re trying to chase 250, everything has to go right. And we went out there to try and make everything go right, and obviously it didn’t,” Phillips said.

Phillips was retained by GT ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction despite suffereing a groin injury mid-way through IPL 2025 which saw him being ruled out of the rest of the tournament. In 2026, he played just 6 matches in which he scored just 67 runs whille he didn’t bowl at all. What is baffling is that GT decided to send a benched star to attend a post-match press conference instead of opting for someone who was a part of the playing XI or a member of the support staff.

Talking about the Qualifier 1, RCB set a mammoth 255-run target for GT – the highest in an IPL playoff game – thanks to a whirlwind 93-run knock from captain Rajat Patidar. In response, GT were reduced to 51/5 at the end of the powerplay. All bowlers grabbed their chances too. The best of the lot once again was Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who returned with figures of 2/28, to get the purple cap from Kagiso Rabada. Rasikh Salam and Krunal Pandya also picked up 2 wickets each, while Jacob Duffy ended with 3.
