The man who allegedly shot a La Porte County sheriff’s deputy at a northwest Indiana hospital, leaving him seriously wounded, allegedly stole his mother’s car from her at gunpoint hours before the shooting, authorities said.
Sharod Grafton, 22, was charged with attempted murder, battery against a public safety official and auto theft. According to court documents, Deputy Jon Samuelson located a disabled Chrysler 300 near State Road 2 and 900 West on Friday morning while headed to a department-sanctioned training. Grafton, the driver of the vehicle, requested the deputy take him to the hospital.
Once inside the emergency room at Franciscan Health Michigan City, Grafton allegedly opened fire, shooting Samuelson three times. He sustained a gunshot wound to the left shoulder and a graze wound to the right calf. A third bullet entered the deputy’s head through his left ear, exited through his neck and then reentered his neck and lodged itself inside his T1 vertebrate, court documents stated.
Samuelson remained hospitalized and was continuing to receive treatment as of Tuesday.
Just before shots were fired, Samuelson learned from fellow officers that the vehicle had been reported stolen.
According to court records, Grafton allegedly stole the vehicle from his mother at her residence in Chicago prior to the shooting. His mother told police she arrived home at around 3 a.m. that morning and found Grafton had barricaded himself inside the residence with her 1-year-old and 10-year-old daughters.
After Grafton refused to let her in, she called 911.
The mother said she eventually forced herself inside the home through a rear door. Once she was inside, Grafton allegedly pointed a small handgun at her and demanded the keys to her vehicle. She complied, and Grafton fled from the residence.
The mother later confirmed her missing keys were those found inside the bed of a truck parked outside the Michigan City hospital; Grafton had jumped in the truck’s bed following the shooting, court documents stated.
Grafton was later apprehended in a wooded area near the hospital and lodged in the LaPorte County Jail. He was transferred to the Porter County Jail, where he remained in custody as of Tuesday.
