East Rochester sergeant gets new kidney from coworker

EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A sergeant with the East Rochester Police Department received a life-changing gift Tuesday from a co-worker who donated a kidney.

Sergeant Noah Fast, who was born with only one kidney, spent years on the transplant list and was facing the prospect of going on dialysis long term. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke to Fast’s wife Nikki Fast about how the donation came together and how he’s doing after surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Nikki said that when East Rochester Police Department clerk Tammy Elliott heard Noah mention possibly needing dialysis, she offered to donate a kidney. “She offhandedly made a comment of, if it gets to that point, let me know. I’d love to donate and see if I’d be a candidate,” Nikki Fast said.

A few months later, Elliott surprised the Fasts by telling them she took the tests and found out she was a qualified donor. “It was a shock to find out that there was a transplant that was so readily available. It’s such a blessing that Tammy has selflessly decided to donate her kidney to Noah, and we’re forever grateful. We truly are,” Fast said.

The surgery began Tuesday morning. Fast did have to come in last week for a few days of emergency dialysis.

“The most stress for me and for Noah, I think, came down to having to go into the hospital early when things weren’t going according to plan, of waiting until Tuesday to be hospitalized,” Fast said.

While Stablow was speaking with Nikki Fast, she and her best friend Amanda Guessford got a call with news that the surgery went well. “So we just got great news from Doctor Cash that Noah is out of surgery. Everything went well. And he’ll be in recovery, and we can go see him in the PACU unit,” Fast said.

East Rochester Police Department Chief Mike Brandenburg said stories like this show that the department is like a family. “We really take care of each other. It also says about Tammy that people talk about supporting the police. But this is an actual supporting an officer directly, you know, essentially saving his life,” Brandenburg said.

Recovery for everyone is different after kidney transplants, but Nikki Fast said she’s hoping Noah will be home by this weekend. Brandenburg said Noah and Tammy will have all the time they need to recover. In the meantime, the East Rochester Police Department will have some part-timers at the clerk’s desk and another sergeant filling in for Fast.
