A suburban teenager charged in connection with an incident during a teen takeover that injured five Chicago police officers over Memorial Day weekend appeared in court Tuesday on several charges, including attempted murder.

Rashad Johnson, 18, was charged with the following, according to Chicago police:

Attempted first-degree murder – Five felony counts Aggravated battery/Use of a deadly weapon – Five felony counts Aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon/Person/No FOID – One felony count Aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon/Person/Loaded/No FOID – One felony count Criminal damage to property less than $500

The incident unfolded early Sunday morning as officers responded to a massive teen gathering near the intersection of Roosevelt and Loomis, according to Chicago police.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office said Johnson, who was in the car with two friends, ended up going the wrong way on Roosevelt and ignored police who told him to pull over. Johnson then struck five officers, and it’s believed he did so intentionally, prosecutors said. He was apprehended after crashing his car into a pole and a fence.

Prosecutors said Johnson traveled to the city on a learner’s permit and had a semi-automatic gun with an extended magazine in his possession.

The gathering was one of several teen takeovers during the holiday weekend that led to traffic disruptions, fights and repeated efforts by police to disperse crowds.

On Sunday night, officers arrested 52 people, including 24 teenagers, during another large gathering at 57th Street Beach.

Crisis responders and violence interrupters from multiple organizations said they’re monitoring social media for signs of more potential takeovers and are maintaining a presence on the ground.

The Metropolitan Peace Initiative told NBC Chicago they had around a dozen members on the scene, trying to keep the peace, but acknowledged they can only do so much.

“What we’ve learned from doing this and from the data, if you build relationships with them beforehand, you have a better chance of mediate and essentially leading that behavior to a positive effect,” James Mitchell with the initiative said. “We get there early, we start talking with the kids before they come in, we make sure we meet with CPD.”

Tio Hardiman, president of Violence Interrupters, said his organization can’t be everywhere at once.

“We have outreach organizations working throughout the city, right now, so it’s hard to just patrol every crack or crevice in the city,” Hardiman stated. “It’s not easy, but we’re doing the best we can do.”

As for Johnson, his defense asked for him to be released on electronic monitoring, noting he doesn’t have a criminal background and maintained he didn’t hit the officers on purpose.

The judge disagreed, ordering him to remain in custody until trial.
