CHARLOTTE, N.Y. — Beach and park visitors at Ontario Beach Park are sharing mixed reactions to the increased police presence following a 400-person brawl that broke out last week.

On Monday, at least five sheriff cruisers were in the parking lot. Many Rochester police officers were also on foot and in their cars throughout the day.
Alex Houston, who visits the beach every Memorial Day, said fewer people showed up this year.
“This Memorial Day seems to be lighter in people but I’m still glad I came out,” Houston said.
When asked if last weekend’s brawl affected attendance, he said it absolutely did.
“I give it a couple more weekends before people start heading out here again,” Houston said.
He said he feels safer with more police around and thinks other people do too.
“But I don’t think about that. I try to have a good time,” he said.
Amy Taylor, who lives in Charlotte, said there has not been a single issue since the brawl.
“Usually every year there’s one incident as the weather gets warmer and that’s it,” Taylor said. “I understand and you have every right to be a little concerned and hesitated to come down here, but there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of.”
On Friday, local leaders announced new safety measures for the weekend, including boats in the water, drones in the sky and live cameras that can record.

Leaders also said an automatic gate will now close at 10 p.m. every night so no more cars can get into the parking lot.
