ROCHESTER, N.Y. — People across the Rochester area gathered on Monday to honor those who died while serving their country. The City of Rochester and multiple towns held Memorial Day parades and ceremonies to honor the sacrifice of fallen U.S. military members.

The Most Reverend John Bonnici, the bishop of Rochester, led the service. Earlier this week, volunteers planted 6,000 flags at the veterans section of the cemetery.
“We have a large veteran section. We put flags on all the veterans’ graves and so on and it’s just nice to be able to have a service to commemorate that,” Bonnici said.
Later in the morning, the Rochester Memorial Day Parade kicked off at the corner of East Avenue and Alexander Street. From there, it headed down East Avenue, with marching bands, dance troupes, legions of veterans, and community groups taking part. It finished at the corner of Main and Fitzhugh streets.
In addition, Pittsford held its annual parade, with bands and veterans marching from Pittsford-Sutherland High School to Pittsford Cemetery. A remembrance ceremony took place at the cemetery.
