ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester began a new tradition on Memorial Day with its first ever Memorial Day Mass.
The Rochester Catholic Diocese’s new Bishop John Bonnici was there to celebrate the special Memorial Day liturgy. Flags are placed on every grave in the cemetery’s veteran section, and complimentary flags are available in the main lobby for families whose loved ones are not buried in a veteran section.
“We have a large veteran section. We put flags on all the veterans’ graves and so on and it’s just nice to be able to have a service to commemorate that,” Bonnici said.
The cemetery also hosts monthly masses of remembrance on Saturdays. Memorial Day is viewed as the unofficial first day of summer, but what it’s really about is honoring the military service members who died while serving our country.
Bonnici was appointed by Pope Leo XIV after he accepted the resignation of Bishop Salvatore Matano.
