ROCHESTER, N.Y. — This Memorial Day, the Rochester area is honoring those who died while serving their country. As News10NBC has covered, advances in DNA technology are helping to make sure that military members who gave the ultimate sacrifice are never forgotten.
We’ve reported on three cases of fallen World War II soldiers whose remains were identified decades later and returned to their closest living relatives in the Rochester area. Recently, there was also a fallen World War II airman from Troy whose remains were identified through DNA technology. See our coverage:
Family discovers long-lost WWII soldier through DNA testing
Private Robert Cash was reunited with his closest living relatives and buried in Pittsford over 80 years after he died in a prisoner of war camp in the Philippines. He survived the 65-mile Bataan Death March but died from an illness at the camp six months later. He was buried in a common grave until 2019, when his remains were exhumed and DNA confirmed his identity.
The day after his remains arrived, News10NBC went to the family’s house in Webster. They had never heard of Private Cash until the Army sent Kathleen Falardeau-LeBerth a letter saying she was his closest living relative. See the full story here.
Remains of WWII airman from Central NY identified after 80 years
Tech. Sgt. Lynn Farnham was reunited with his closest living relatives over 80 years after he was shot down over Germany during World War II. We spoke with Farnham’s nephew, Tom Farnham, at the Military History Museum in Village Gate.
Lynn Farnham grew up in Central New York and was part of a B-17 crew flying missions over Germany in preparation for D-Day. On February 25, 1944, a German fighter plane shot down his aircraft. Three weeks later, his mother received a letter stating he was missing in action. See the full story here.
Soldier who died in WWII laid to rest in Lyons
Army Sgt. John Pagliuso was burried in Lyons, 83 years after he was killed during World War II. Sgt. Pagliuso was killed in action in 1942 during a bombing mission over Papua New Guinea. News10NBC spoke with Sgt. Pagliuso’s niece after his body was flown home.
“It’s pretty exciting and pretty emotional,” Norma Davis said. “I never met my uncle, but I’m feeling like I’m getting to know him through all of the preparation for this.”
Sgt. Pagliuso’s remains were flown to the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport and there was a procession to honor his service and sacrifice. See the full story here.
