The Jalen Duren Conundrum? All-NBA Teams, Bennett Stirtz at 15? and Other Bulls Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

A long weekend this week, Bulls fans, which means no updates today on who the next Chicago Bulls head coach will be.

However, while we wait, there are still some fun storylines brewing for our team in the Windy City. The NBA also announced its three All-NBA teams last night, and there’s a new draft prospect to keep an eye on for 2026.

A lot to get into.

Let’s talk Bulls basketball.

© Maria Lysaker-Imagn Images Last night, the NBA revealed its three All-NBA teams. The teams feature the 15 best players in the league this season who played a minimum of 65 games. And here’s how the teams shaped out. On the All-NBA First Team: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from the OKC Thunder, Nikola Jokić from the Denver Nuggets, Victor Wembanyama from the San Antonio Spurs, Luka Dončić from the Los Angeles Lakers, and Cade Cunningham from the Detroit Pistons. On the All-NBA Second Team: Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics, Jalen Brunson from the New York Knicks, Kevin Durant from the Houston Rockets, Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers, and Donovan Mitchell from the Cleveland Cavaliers. And finally, on the All-NBA Third Team: Jamal Murray from the Denver Nuggets, Tyrese Maxey from the Philadelphia 76ers, Jalen Johnson from the Atlanta Hawks, Chet Holmgren from the OKC Thunder, and the one most important to Bulls fans, Jalen Duren from the Detroit Pistons.

— NBA Communications (@NBAPR) May 24, 2026 I’d say the teams are pretty much what fans expected them to look like. Maybe there are some guys like Scottie Barnes and Deni Avdija who I’d have preferred to see make an All-NBA team. But then the next question becomes: who are you taking off? Also, some interesting things to note from the final voting: Wemby and Luka did not receive unanimous First-Team votes, which is pretty hilarious. Even more surprising, Stephon Castle, in just his sophomore season, finished with the same amount of voting points as LaMelo Ball and more than Bam Adebayo, Derrick White, Cooper Flagg, Brandon Ingram, and Evan Mobley. And obviously, no Bulls received a vote. But that isn’t too surprising. Back to the Jalen Duren situation, and here’s why it just got even more interesting. The 22-year-old All-Star and now All-NBA center had a great regular season but an awful 14-game stretch in the NBA Playoffs. He saw his production get cut in half when the lights were brightest and had one of the biggest regular-season-to-playoff drops in recent NBA memory. Duren went from 20 and 11 in the regular season to 10 and 8 on worse efficiency. His inability to create his own shot and stretch the floor got exposed in both the first and second rounds. However, Duren will be a restricted free agent in the 2026 offseason after declining an extension from the Pistons last year in hopes of making more money through his play this season. And technically, it worked. By making an All-NBA team, Duren could now earn a lot more money than the Pistons were willing to offer him last season. But the problem now: is he actually worth that amount of money after all the issues in his game were exposed during the playoffs? The consensus around the league seems to be no. And there are even reports coming out of Detroit that suggest the Pistons may feel the same way. But I assume Jalen Duren and his camp don’t.

By making All-NBA, Jalen Duren is now eligible to sign a five-year max deal with the Detroit Pistons worth a projected $287.1M (30% of the cap):26-27: $49.5M27-28: $53.5M28-29: $57.4M29-30: $61.4M30-31: $65.3MDuren's max with the Pistons was previously 5/$239.3MMax with…

— Keith Smith (@KeithSmithNBA) May 24, 2026 Now that Duren has made an All-NBA team, instead of being eligible for a 5-year, $239.3M deal, he is now eligible for a 5-year, $287.1M contract. The max another team can offer Duren is 4 years, $177.4M. Being a restricted free agent means Duren can sign an offer sheet with any team in the NBA, and the Pistons would then have the ability to match it. But if the money gets too high, Detroit could end up handicapping itself for the future, or potentially let a 22-year-old All-Star walk for nothing. That’s where the Bulls could come in. The Bulls have the most open cap sheets this offseason, and Bryson Graham has said he could use that flexibility to throw money at restricted free agents. Now, I wouldn’t want the Bulls to handicap themselves either. But even if they offer Duren above his current market value and make the Pistons sweat, would it really be that bad? Best-case scenario: the Pistons get stuck overpaying for Duren. Worst-case scenario: the Bulls do. Chicago has no real playoff aspirations for at least the next couple of years, but it also cannot afford to become one of the worst teams in the NBA under the new lottery reforms. Having a young big man who fits the Bulls’ timeline, makes them better, and eats up cap space they don’t really need right now may not be the worst outcome in the world.

— The Ringer (@ringer) May 18, 2026 And finally, we’re just 29 days away from the NBA Draft, and who the Bulls pick at 15 is still very much up in the air. However, one name we can add to the bucket of consideration is Bennett Stirtz from Iowa. The 22-year-old senior is one of the older prospects in this draft class, but also one of the more intriguing ones. After a great season last year, leading Iowa to the Elite Eight, Stirtz is now set to participate in NBA pre-draft workouts with the Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, and Toronto Raptors. Those three teams hold picks in the 14–19 range, which is exactly where Stirtz is currently mocked to land.

— Vince Wolfram (@vincewolfram15) May 25, 2026 The Chicago Bulls have also been linked to other names in this range, like Cameron Carr and Morez Johnson, that I would prefer. But I don’t think you can be too upset with Stirtz, who has proven to be a workhorse and a great floor-raiser. With Stirtz, the Bulls could realistically open up trade talks involving Tre Jones and head into next season with Josh Giddey, Rob Dillingham, and Stirtz as the three primary ball handlers on the roster.
