Colorado Crashing Out, Bad Trades, Memorial Cup, and Other Blackhawks Memorial Day Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

If things didn’t look great for the Colorado Avalanche going into Sunday’s Game 3 in Vegas, to say they’re at a breaking point is an understatement. They got Cale Makar back for the game on Sunday, and sprinted to a 3-0 lead in the first period. The lead was gone by the end of the second period, and the game ended with the Golden Knights owning a 5-3 victory and 3-0 series lead.

Making matters worse, Nathan MacKinnon took a hard shot to his knee and could barely return. He took only four shifts in the third period and appeared to have no acceleration. While we saw that on the broadcast plenty, we didn’t see that Colorado forward Valeri Nichushkin didn’t take a shift in the final 22 minutes of the game.

The vibes on the Colorado side are brutal right now.

— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) May 25, 2026 Now is probably a good time to remind everyone that the last Presidents Trophy winner to get to the Stanley Cup Final is the 2013 Chicago Blackhawks. I keep seeing people — national writers and, for some reason, Blackhawks fans — proposing terrible trades in which the Hawks give up a premium asset (either prospect(s)/young player(s) or pick(s) in the first or second round) to get a player in a deal that helps a team with cap issues. The days of the André Burakovsky trades need to be over. The Blackhawks shouldn’t do other teams favors at this point. And I don’t expect them to. If a team has a cap problem, the Blackhawks should target the players on that roster they can’t afford to keep — not the ones they don’t want to pay any more. We really need to evolve our thought process when considering trade options. Also: the Blackhawks don’t need to trade for a guy who hits people. They also don’t need to overpay for the wrong guy based on nothing more than his height, weight and hit totals. I know, I know… “the Hawks need to be tougher to player against.” I agree. That doesn’t justify either taking on a bad contract or offering a deal they’ll regret before it ends. Blackhawks prospect Jack Pridham and the Kitchener Rangers will skate against potential 2027 No. 1 overall pick Landon DuPont and Everett this evening at the Memorial Cup. Nice read here from Ben Pope on Cole Tuminaro, a big right-handed defenseman from the Chicago Steel who could hear his name called in four weeks. He’s listed at 6-4 and 229 pounds and will play at Cornell this fall.

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) May 24, 2026 Finally, on this Memorial Day, I am mindful of all those service members who have paid the ultimate price. My family has a long military history (in the US and Britain). I have many friends who are currently serving or have served. But today I’m thinking about the family of one of my teammates on the Hinsdale Central swim team. Pfc. Gunnar Hotchkin was killed in action June 16, 2010, in northern Afghanistan.
