BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The USA Lacrosse National Tournament was held at SUNY Brockport this weekend, bringing together the best high school players from across the country.
The tournament featured goals, saves and top-tier competition in its 93rd year. Twenty-seven states were represented in this weekend’s field.
“We are here participating in the Women’s National Tournament, which is going in its 93rd year annually, where it features some of the best players from around the country and high school ages,” Kristy Nutt said.
Nutt is the director of events for USA Lacrosse. She has seen the sport grow firsthand, including its addition to the LA 2028 Olympics.
“Just been amazing to see how many people are just excited to get more involved and engaged and kind of keep the sport growing and build on the momentum heading into ’28,” Nutt said.
In some cases, girls who had only known each other for a week dominated together.
“We had our first practice about a week ago, and that’s when I first met everyone. So it’s really exciting,” Ella Schofield said, a sophomore for the Massachusetts-Rhode Island Team Three.
The Massachusetts-Rhode Island region swept all three divisions of Sunday’s championships. Razmaal Saunders is an assistant coach for the program’s team three.
“I think the girls, took the time to kind of really figure out how to best help each other. Nobody was selfish. Everybody was looking for the next person to get them to play and just take the opportunity to really show what Massachusetts-Rhode Island lacrosse can be,” Saunders said.
The tournament was about more than competing against the rest of the country. It was also about taking pride in where you’re from, your home region or your home state.
“I think for them it’s about the pride. It’s the regional state pride. They come in, a lot of these players, are wearing on their jerseys their state national team representation along with the USA lacrosse logo. So I think it’s all about the pride of being able to say, hey, we represented our region and we just won a championship,” Nutt said.
That home state pride and those pinnies could eventually turn into national pride and Team USA jerseys. But that’s not the only reason to play.
“A lot of these regions need more officials. They need more coaches to keep bringing in, the young women to come in and keep playing. There’s lots of opportunities. Continue your journey, whatever it may be in the sport of lacrosse,” Nutt said.
Saunders encouraged people to get involved in the sport. “Perfect lacrosse weather is is the way to win. You know, anytime it’s not raining and thundering, you’re always in perfect lacrosse weather. So grab a stick and, hit the wall and have some fun with people that are next to you,” Saunders said.
