GREECE, N.Y. — Two people died and one person is in critical condition after a house fire on Bancroft Drive in Greece.

The Barnard Fire District announced Sunday morning that two people were found dead on the second floor during the fire. Six people were home when the fire started, according to the fire district.
Neighbors told News10NBC’s Declan Stablow they came outside after hearing screaming coming from the house. They said the home was engulfed in flames and smoke.
“So I looked out my window and see it was my neighbor’s house. So me and my sister just ran outside to check if everyone was okay. And we just try to hold back my younger siblings because I was their best friend in the house, and I just wanted to see if, like, the neighbors were okay, but I couldn’t get past,” Janiya Heard said.
Heard said she’s known the family who lived there since she was young. She said it feels tragic looking at their house now.
Police, EMS and several fire departments responded to the scene. Neighbors said once crews arrived, they were able to get the fire out quickly.
The house shows extensive burn damage on the side and roof. Piles of burnt furniture and debris remain in the front yard.
Heard added the family living in the home would often look out for the kids in the neighborhood.
The Barnard Fire District handed out smoke detectors to neighbors Sunday afternoon. The Monroe County Fire Bureau is still investigating what started the fire.
