Kristof Milak tightened his hold on the Mare Nostrum championship record in the 100 fly, with the Hungarian swimmer breaking his own record in the event with a time of 50.66.
Milak shaved .09 off both the Mare Nostrum championship and Monaco records, which he previously set back in 2024 in 50.75.
Milak was out fast in 23.65 on the opening 50, before coming home in 27.01 to secure the gold and slide under the record line. He was the only competitor in the field to break 51 seconds, with runner-up Noe Ponti of Switzerland stopping the clock in 51.11 and France’s Maxime Grousset touching 3rd in 51.49.
Despite breaking the championship record, Milak’s winning performance was not a personal best. He holds a lifetime best time of 49.68 from the 2020 Olympic Games and recently posted a season-best time of 50.22 at the Hungarian Nationals, which ranked him first in the world in this event so far this season.
The 2024 Olympic champion in this event, Milak is the 3rd-fastest performer ever in the 100 fly thanks to his silver medal-winning time of 49.68 at the Tokyo Games. He sits just behind Caeleb Dressel (49.45) and Grousset (49.62) in the all-time world rankings.
Milak’s record-breaking performance in the 100 fly handed him his second gold medal of the Mare Nostrum stop in Monaco; he secured the championship title in the 100 free (48.13) on day one.
