Dawson’s swim broke the previous record of a 27.45 set by Scott Dickens in 2009 during the supersuited era.
Dawson entered the day with a lifetime best 27.46 that he swam just last month. He notably was 32nd last summer at the 2025 World Championships with a 27.55 but his time from today would have been 22nd.
The previous record of a 27.45 held by Dickens was one of the oldest Canadian Records still standing on the men’s side. Only two records were older as the men’s 200 breast of a 2:08.84 set by Mike Brown and the 400 IM record of a 4:11.41 set by Brian Johns still sit from 2008. Dickens still holds the 100 breast national record with a 59.85.
This marks the first individual and 2nd overall Canadian Record for the 18 year old Dawson. He is a member of the Canadian men’s 4×100 medley relay record as he split a 59.99 at the 2025 World Championships to help them to a 5th place finish and National Record.
Dawson is set to join the NCAA and arrive this fall at Indiana University. Indiana is well-known for developing breaststrokers as it is currently home to Josh Matheny and Van Mathias. It has also been the home to names such as Lilly King, Annie Lazor, Jassen Yep, Brian Benzing, and Finn Brooks.
