Check Vijay Shankar’s career stats as ‘3D player’ bids adieu to cricket after glorious domestic run ...Middle East

Sport by : (Inside sport) -

Considered a versatile cricketer with his 3D skills (Batting, bowling and fielding), India all-rounder Vijay Shankar announced his retirement from all formats of the game on on May 22. The Tamil Nadu-born brought down the curtains on his cricketing career after being out of favour with the Indian team, with whom he played 21 white-ball games across 2018 and 2019. He also lost his place in the IPL after going unsold at the auction.

World Cup call-up, controversy and the downfall

Vijay Shankar, who made his First Class and List A debuts for Tamil Nadu in 2012, established himself as a dependable all-rounder by 2014-15. His rise as an all-rounder in domestic cricket led him to earn an India A call-up. While he made his IPL debut in 2014 with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), his breakthrough season came in 2017 with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), which earned him his T20I debut in March 2018 against Sri Lanka. A year later, he made his ODI debut against Australia in Melbourne and was also selected for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. That remains the biggest selection controversy.

Despite getting a nod ahead of Ambati Rayudu for the CWC 2019 due to his 3D skills – batting, bowling and fielding, Shankar could not make a mark in the tournament in England. While fans debated over his selection as an experienced campaigner was dropped over the versatility of a player, his CWC 2019 was cut short by an injury.

Before bowing out of the tournament, he became just the third bowler in WC history to take a wicket on the very first delivery when he cleaned-bowled Pakistan’s Imam-ul-Haq. However, his international career wasn’t prolonged as he battled injuries and put up inconsistent batting performances in his limited opportunities. Thus, he lost his place gradually in India’s competitive middle-order setup.
