A 15-year-old girl is facing arson charges after the Kane County Cougars’ team bus was destroyed in a fiery blaze early Thursday morning while parked at a stadium in Canada, authorities said.
Around 1:50 a.m., patrol officers from multiple Canadian police districts responded to Goldeyes Stadium, located at 1 Portage Ave. in Winnipeg and found the Kane County Cougars’ bus “fully engulfed in flames,” Winnipeg police said.
A charter bus rented by the team was parked at the lot while on a road trip, police said. The entire bus and contents were destroyed in the fire.
A bystander who was in the area saw someone inside the bus and helped with removing him, police said. When police arrived, two teenagers were taken into custody.
Investigators determined that the fire was deliberately set, authorities said.
One of the two teens taken into custody from the scene, 15-year-old girl, is facing arson and possession of incendiary material charges, police said.
“Thankfully everyone is okay and only some gear and personal property was lost,” said Chris Huang, vice president and general manager of the team.
The team rented another bus to take them from Winnipeg to Fargo, North Dakota on Thursday for their games this weekend, Huang said.
