Chicago Bears rookie defensive lineman Jordan van den Berg has caught the eye of one of the NFL’s top analysts.
Brian Baldinger, whose posts analyzing the game on Twitter always get me to stop what I’m doing to tune in, has a comparison for a Bears sixth-round pick that stopped me in my tracks.
Here is the Baldy breakdown:

“I heard Jordan van den Berg has been popping for the Bears in minicamps.” “Watch him against the left guard … martial arts used the momentum against him.” “Watch the technique right here. The technique is awesome. Watch the right tackle come down on him, watch the corkscrew to stay alive. Great core strength to come out of it.” “Don’t get cut off by the center. Use your first-step quickness to defeat the center’s block, flatten, and make the tackle. He did that a lot at Georgia Tech.” “He’s a backside B-gap player. Watch the footwork here. This is what we’re talking about. See that footwork? He’s beating this guard in a phone booth, and then he flattens to make the tackle.” “Reminds me of a young Grady Jarrett, who was a fifth-round pick of the Falcons.” “You watch him right here. See that first-step quickness? This is what’s going to work for him at this level. Everything, whether it’s the run or the pass, what’s your first-step quickness like? Because that’s going to allow you to defeat a lot of blocks. Plus, he has great strength and athletic ability.”I’m hesitant to get too overhyped about a rookie Day 3 pick. But with that being said, I am excited to see what Jordan van den Berg can bring to the table. The Bears have had some solid Day 3 contributors from recent draft classes. Running back Kyle Monangai, defensive end Austin Booker, and offensive lineman Braxton Jones come to mind when I think about recent late-round selections who have helped Chicago’s football team.

OK, so Grady Jarrett’s 2025 season with Chicago wasn’t what anyone was hoping for when he signed as a free agent last offseason. However, his overall body of work is strong. Jarrett is a two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman who has three years with 6+ sacks, three with 10+ tackles-for-loss, and seven seasons with 10+ quarterback hits. A fifth-round pick (137th overall) by the Falcons in 2015, Jarrett has outperformed where he was drafted. Perhaps he can help Jordan van den Berg do the same. At a minimum, Jarrett could provide a blueprint for the rookie since he knows what it takes to go from Day 3 pick to NFL contributor.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BEARS ROOKIE JORDAN VAN DEN BERG
Jordan van den Berg is the type of athletic freak who might be just what the Bears’ defensive line needs. Given that the team hasn’t done much besides add depth pieces along the interior, JVDB might need to make an impact as a rookie Day 3 pick for Chicago’s defense to be good in 2026. Then again, things might line up for him to earn a good number of snaps based on who the Bears have set to compete in camp.
