Man Utd have four good reasons for giving Michael Carrick the job ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

The Ole Gunnar Solskjaer comparisons are obvious. The interim getting the big job. A club legend who has turned things around garnering his just rewards.

There are those who feel the Manchester United hierarchy are not learning from past mistakes in sticking by Michael Carrick on a permanent basis.

Solskjaer showed promise but lacked that tactical acumen to really challenge the elite once again.

Why will another rookie coach in Carrick be any different?

What those naysayers need to understand is that the two situations were very different, and appointing Carrick on a two-year deal is a reassuring sign that co-owners Ineos is taking a long overdue careful and considered approach to all that it does at Old Trafford.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing

Firstly, hindsight has taught us that Solskjaer was not as out of his depth as he was perceived to be upon departure in 2021.

United’s recent malaise highlighted how the style of football that the Norwegian adopted was as exhilarating as anything supporters have bore witness to in the post Sir Alex Ferguson wilderness years.

They came as close to winning the title as they have at any point in that time, too.

Where Ineos has made sure to differentiate is the length of Carrick’s contract, one year less than Solskjaer signed up for.

A one-year offer would be somewhat insulting, but a two-year deal sends the message that the 44-year-old is getting the chance he deserves, but if things don’t continue on their current trajectory, the club will make a change in the managerial hotseat.

Three years suggests faith that Carrick, nor Solskjaer, warranted.

Other options unavailable

United also had more options available when they gambled on Solskjaer.

Mauricio Pochettino was heavily linked with the United job at the time.

The Argentine was keen and had proven himself at a top Premier League club.

Fan support for Solskjaer meant he was overlooked and went to Paris Saint-Germain instead.

This time around, the credible options were thin on the ground.

Andoni Iraola was under serious consideration but for all the amazing work he has done with Bournemouth, he has never coached a side in Europe before.

Luis Enrique was the top pick though the Spaniard is on the verge of signing a new deal in Paris.

Julian Nagelsmann’s big downside was that he wouldn’t be available until after Germany’s World Cup campaign is over – vital months of preparation lost.

United simply cannot afford to write off another season from the get-go.

Keen to avoid past mistakes

Several sources insisted, earlier in the process, that senior officials wanted an elite coach with Premier League experience to replace Ruben Amorim.

The underlying feeling after the dust had settled following Amorim’s acrimonious departure in January was the Portuguese coach was a mistake, out of his depth at a global behemoth like United.

United did not want to make the same error of judgement again.

The only problem was, all those top managers, like Carlo Ancelotti, were off the table months ago.

What Carrick lacks in elite-level managerial experience, he makes up for with an in-depth understanding of the expectation that comes with being United boss, having spent half of his life in and around the club.

To turn things around in such dramatic fashion this season – nobody has won more points in the Premier League since Carrick took charge, not Mikel Arteta nor Pep Guardiola – meant another external candidate had to possess both the credentials and, most pertinently, the availability.

Simply put, there were no other suitable options.

The sensible approach

The players are all behind Carrick, a well-oiled coaching unit below the manager, one already in cahoots with United’s new data department, is set in place.

To undo all that and appoint another coach who did not tick all the boxes would have been a monumental risk.

Ineos’s recruitment policy has been methodical and carefully thought-out, the antithesis of the scattergun approach of signing ill-fitting big names on inflated wages previously.

Carrick is the managerial equivalent of some of their recent player signings – talented, younger and without the ego.

The pros and cons of his appointment were meticulously evaluated, too.

In the end anyone other than Carrick would have been the biggest gamble, rather than the other way round like it was with Solskjaer.

After years of chaos, United have gone sensible.

The feelgood factor around M16 suggests a first, sustained title tilt is not beyond this fallen giant as a result.
