ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Communities along Lake Ontario could be at risk of flooding by next Friday. Water levels in the lake are a quarter-inch from flood stage and could pass flood stage by May 29.
That’s according to the latest forecast from the International Joint Commission, a U.S.-Canadian partnership that tracks water levels in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.
For weeks, News10NBC has been tracking how communities in Greece, Webster, Irondequoit, Sodus, and more have been preparing for rising lake levels. Some towns are distributing sandbags, and the Town of Greece has water pumps on standby along Edgemere Drive.
The IJC predicts that the water level will be higher than 247.24 feet next Friday. You can see the latest report here. IJC United States board member Tony David told News10NBC that lake levels started to taper off, but trended up again after rainfall.
When Lake Ontario flooded in 2017 and 2019, it caused tens of millions of dollars in damage to local homes and businesses. The chance of flooding doesn’t just depend on water levels, but also on the wind direction. During the 2017 and 2019 floods, winds coming from the north led to larger waves along the shore.
