Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar came down hard at the selectors and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following Auqib Nabi’s shocking snub from the squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan. Despite picking up 60 wickets from 10 matches in the Ranji Trophy 2025/26, the Jammu and Kashmir pacer found no place in the 15-member squad that was announced earlier this week. Vengsarkar is the latest to join the bandwagon who have questioned the BCCI on why players aren’t picked for Tests based on their performances in the Ranji Trophy, despite the board making it mandatory for all cricketers to play the domestic tournament in order to fancy a chance of being picked in the national team.
‘Can you imagine Nabi’s plight?’
Speaking to the Times of India, Vengsarkar claimed that Nabi deserved a place in the Test squad ahead of everybody else as he had picked 60 wickets in the Ranji Trophy. The former Indian chief selector lashed out at the BCCI and said that if performances in domestic cricket weren’t a yardstick for a player to be picked in the Test side, then it should be scrapped. Dubbing the selectors’ decision as absurd and baffling, Vengsarkar said that it was a grave injustice to the player and was just not acceptable.
“The selectors’ decision to ignore him is absolutely absurd and baffling. What kind of selection is this? It is just not acceptable. It is an injustice. If domestic cricket performances are not a criterion, then the BCCI should scrap domestic cricket,” Vengsarkar said.

In this year’s tournament, he led J&K to their maiden Ranji title and picked up a staggering 60 wickets at an average of 12.56. This happens to be only the third time a pacer has managed to do that — after Dodda Ganesh (62 wickets in 1998-99), and Jaydev Unadkat (67 in 2019-20). And then a year before that, he had bagged 44 in 8 matches, the second most in the season.
