ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As costs for groceries continue to rise, shoppers are searching for ways to save money without sacrificing quality.
News10NBC’s Garrett Chan stopped by the Rochester Public Market where it has become a go-to spot for many shoppers. Chan got a couple bags of groceries, including 15 oranges for $3.
“I enjoy coming here. The prices are reasonable. But what I like the most is that the vegetables and the fruits and the variety of it is fresh,” one shopper said.
“Yeah, cherries are much cheaper. This is like 2 pounds for $5 and then the store is $6 for one pound,” another shopper said.
From organic fruits and vegetables, wines to specialty jams, there is no shortage of options at the Rochester Public Market. Jim Farr is the market’s director.
He said the plethora of vendors creates competition, bringing the best out of the different products available while lowering costs.
“One of the things that you have here that you don’t have perhaps in a grocery store is you’re buying a lot of times you’re buying directly from the producer. But even if you’re buying from one of the wholesalers resellers, they’re taking out a lot of different costs and they’re built into the supermarket model. Now, you don’t have all the staff, you don’t have the brick and mortar structure,” Farr said.
Shoppers said the Public Market is a way to supplement most of their shopping. They prefer to come here for the variety and freshness of fruits and vegetables, while going to their local grocery stores for their meat and dairy.
And while saving a few extra dollars is great, shoppers and vendors alike said being able to support local businesses and farmers is an added bonus.
“Coming here is a nice way for me to be able to compete with the big guys. So. Yeah. So, so this is a good niche, a good market to be able to sell,” John Rich, a vendor for Elderberry Winery, said.
“People like to support local businesses. They know the money stays in the communities. And they like to have specialty products that they can’t get in other places,” Shauna Gardner, owner of Gardner’s Gourmet Jams, said.
“I expect that during this time when there are high prices that we’ll get even more shoppers than we have in other years,” Farr said.
Farr said some farmers and vendors will drop their prices even more an hour before the market closes so they leave with the least amount of inventory possible.
The market has a token program to help SNAP customers. SNAP recipients can swipe their card and earn market tokens that can be spent like cash. More information can be found here.
