SPENCERPORT, N.Y. — The Spencerport School District is working on a new budget after voters rejected the first plan Tuesday by just 53 votes.
Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean found a troubling trend when he looked into school budget votes across New York. School budgets getting voted down doesn’t happen very often, and the trend has always been going down. In 1994, 200 school budgets in New York lost. In 2021, it was just five.
But the number of no votes winning has crept up every year. Statewide, 11 budgets were defeated in 2023, the next year 19 were defeated, and the year after that 24 were defeated. “Well it’s not a trend we would want to continue. We would want just the opposite,” Zinkiewich said.
Ty Zinkiewich is the superintendent in Spencerport. He said communities are exercising their right to vote on school budgets.
“A community has a say in one thing and that’s the school budget and so I think they’re exercising that right and they’re speaking across the state,” Zinkiewich added.
Tuesday, the Spencerport school budget was voted down for the first time in 25 years. Zinkiewich said the outcome was not what they had hoped for, but the community has a long history of supporting public education.
“Well I don’t think the outcome was what we had hoped for. But we’ve been very fortunate in Spencerport for as long as I can remember of having a community that supports public education,” Zinkiewich added.
Zinkiewich thinks the economy played a factor. Just about everything is more expensive.
“There’s only so much they can do and I think that was a result of yesterday’s outcome,” Zinkiewich said.
Spencerport expects a second budget vote in June. About 1,500 people voted in Spencerport Tuesday, which is 15 percent of the total number of people who are eligible to vote. Only four school budgets have failed in Monroe County in the last seven years.
