Fergie had ‘friends with benefits’ and paid staff in cigarettes, new book claims ...Middle East

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson have been at the centre of countless scandals during their lifetimes, but the publication of a book investigating their behaviour unleashed a tidal wave of new allegations last year – with accounts that ranged from profoundly bizarre to deeply disturbing.

Now, following the release of further claims in the US Department of Justice’s files on Jeffrey Epstein over the last few months, author Andrew Lownie has unearthed a fresh set of insider stories about the couple, shared with him by former staff and associates.

His update to Entitled, which has been released in paperback this week, has provoked an angry response from those who remain close to the former Duke and Duchess of York and say the claims are not true, but the author maintains they are accurate.

Below are some of the most striking accusations and recollections made in the new edition.

How Andrew’s behaviour upset staff, police and family friends

Mountbatten-Windsor’s protection officers are said to have disliked him so much that Lownie suggests one of them may have “roughed him up”, after finding the royal on Palace grounds later at night and pretending to believe that he was a trespasser. The author writes: “It took the policeman an inordinately long time to ‘realise’ that the intruder was the Queen’s second son.”

The former prince is said to have “bullied underlings”. One member of staff at Sunninghill tells Lownie: “If he passed you in the corridor, you had to stop mid-walk and curtsey, and if he thought it was insufficient he’d stand over you saying ‘LOWER’ and make you repeat the curtsey until he was satisfied.”

A family friend recalls an instance when Mountbatten-Windsor kicked a dog. Guests at Sandringham were eating snacks during a break from a pheasant shoot when Mountbatten-Windsor’s Labrador jumped up and snatched a sausage roll from someone’s hand. The guest is said to have laughed but the former duke apparently “kicked the dog in the head, leaving her whimpering on the ground”.

When the guest remarked that this was a “disgusting” thing to have done, Mountbatten-Windsor is said to have told them to “piss off”, adding: “It is none of your business and I will do precisely what I want to MY dogs.” But Prince Philip reportedly commended the guest later that day, saying he agreed it was bad behaviour, adding: “Andrew needs a good scolding from time to time.”

Scandalous official trips abroad

Wendy Erskine, the wife of an RAF wing commander, recalls a conversation with then then-prince at an airbase in 1998 when the prince said that he found the Saudi royal family very boring but visited them frequently because “it made his mother, the Queen, a lot of money in arms deals”.

David Percival, a director at UK Trade & Investment, met Mountbatten-Windsor during their visit to China’s World Expo show in Shanghai in 2010, while the royal was serving as an overseas business envoy. Besides the then-prince being a “massive burden” but offering “no value” for the British team, he recalls his curious demands, including insisting that the luxury hotel where he was staying should not play any music in its lifts.

Another UK trade official who worked in a European embassy claims that when it was suggested that his team should bid for a visit from Mountbatten-Windsor, the ambassador ordered him to write a bid that was so weak it would be bound to fail, to avoid having to deal with the prince. Lownie writes: “When a polite note explaining that the bid had been unsuccessful arrived, the official was summoned by the ambassador and congratulated for his good work.”

On an official trip to the Czech capital Prague in 2003, British expats threw a party in his honour – but the then-prince left early with a former Miss Slovakia. The author alleges that she was working as an escort and that the Prince’s office had allegedly arranged for her to paid €10,000 for one night with him.

John Longmuir, an armed officer based at Heathrow Airport, claims that when the prince entered the first-class cabin of a British Airways airliner in 2004, a stewardess motioned to shake the prince’s hand, only for the then-duke to pull her towards him and spin her around. He is said to have “bent her forward so that his groin was clearly and firmly in contact with her back side. He then appeared to mimic a golf swing and was laughing.” Mountbatten-Windsor has always strenuously denied any acts of sexual abuse.

Lownie writes that the king’s eldest brother carried his teddy bears around “as if they were a security blanket”. When he mistakenly left one behind on a trip to Asia, he demanded that a valet should return to fetch it.

Inside the ‘chaotic’ life of Sarah Ferguson

Sarah Ferguson’s personal assistants tell the author of their “chaotic” life with the duchess, especially on financial matters. One long-serving staff member tells the author that Fergsuon expected to receive many products for free, including designer clothes. When payment was required, staff often had to buy items using their own credit cards – or Ferguson would use her daughter Princess Beatrice’s card instead.

The assistant felt “a crushing sense of embarrassment 80 per cent of the time” because Ferguson used social gatherings to advance any potential business opportunities or securing freebies. The staff member was once tasked with helping to design an artists’ retreat on an island in the Bahamas with the pop star Shakira and Pink Floyd musician Roger Waters.

The team allegedly went unpaid at times and a psychic was once said to have been given cigarettes instead of money. The former assistant claims they were threatened with legal action if they went to the press and that everyone working for the duchess – even a temporary pedicurist – was obliged to sign non-disclosure agreements.

Homayra Sellier, a child protection campaigner, tells Lownie how she invited Ferguson to be appear at a dinner raising money for sexually abused children. The location was two hours from a ski resort where Sarah part-owned a chalet, yet the duchess is said to have requested “two luxurious suites in a five-star hotel, a chauffeur to whisk her back and forth from Verbier, and a business-class ticket from Boston”. It would have cost the non-profit organisation several thousand pounds, so a stung Sellier felt she had no choice but to pay the bill herself.

Her chef was ordered to make a large cream cake every day, even if the previous day’s one had gone uneaten and was thrown away. Meanwhile, personal trainers were on call for her use at any time but were never used. One person was apparently employed purely to organise the various tablets that Sarah took every day. Amidst all this, some recruits “only lasted half a day” because of the demands being placed on them.

An assistant tells Lownie that Ferguson hated Prince Philip and Prince Edward, but she would often speak about her love for the late Queen. However, a source says that Elizabeth II “repeatedly trashed Fergie” in private.

Ferguson’s controversial relationships

Perhaps the most controversial allegations to emerge from the new edition of the book relates to Ferguson’s reported “friends with benefits” relationship with the rapper Sean Combs, which the former duchess’s inner circle has forcefully denied.

The singer, known as P Diddy, was jailed in the US for four years in 2025 after being convicted of two counts of transportation for prostitution. Combs has consistently denied all allegations of sexual abuse.

A former employee at the offender’s record label says that the musician claimed to have had a sexual relationship with Ferguson, bragging about “slamming” him and saying that he “could not wait until Fergie’s daughters come of age”. Lownie claims that another of the singer’s associates confirmed this story.

They are said to have met in 2002 at a party in New York hosted by Epstein’s sexual partner Ghislaine Maxwell, who was jailed in the US for 20 years in 2022 for sex trafficking and grooming. They went on to meet at luxury hotels across Europe and Africa, costing as much as £50,000 per night. He apparently claimed that his pefume, Unforgiveable, was inspired by the duchess.

Ferguson reportedly introduced her daughter Princess Eugenie to Combs at a yacht party when she was 16 , with a former staff member saying: “Sean’s parties were wild… The fact that she brought Eugenie around was alarming.”

A source close to Ferguson has rejected these claims, telling The Times: “This is absolute fabricated nonsense, blatantly untrue.” They added that it was “yet another false allegation” from Lownie. But the author stands by the claims, arguing they are “fully sourced”.

The couple’s difficult lives now

Mountbatten-Windsor had been living together with his ex-wife at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park until the King ordered them to leave following damaging allegations last year. He departed in February.

Mountbatten-Windsor is said to have spent his final months at the mansion “ranting” about how he has been treated. He misses seeing his four grandchildren but spends much of his time riding horses, watching golf on a huge television and playing computer games. Lownie quotes a source as saying: “It’s not uncommon for him to stay up all night playing Call of Duty. He loves war games with helicopters while he’s waited on by his staff.”

As for Ferguson, before leaving Royal Lodge she reportedly drowned her sorrows at a purpose-built bar behind the property, which was wryly nicknamed “The Doghouse”.

Mountbatten-Windsor is now living at Marsh Farm, a property provided by the King at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Little is known about Ferguson’s whereabouts, besides reported sightings in Austria, Switzerland and Qatar.

Lownie includes some quotes from the former prince on “the most distressing experience of [his] life”, shared by a source. “My life has been turned upside down, and often I feel a deep-rooted sense of being alone in the world,” he is said to have commented.

“I need to establish new routines and networks… Money isn’t an issue because I’ve made some shrewd business deals over the years that afford me a good lifestyle. I’ve been completely misunderstood, and I’m hopeful that one day the naked truth will finally let out.”
