According to Lewis, there are patterns in both color preference and intelligence that are "consistent enough to pay attention to." It all comes down to her area of expertise: color psychology, which explores how color influences human behavior and emotion by impacting our brain and nervous system responses. Based on this, she says that "when a highly intelligent person reaches for [a specific color]," it's usually an intentional choice.

She adds that color choice in clothing "can reveal whether they're introspective or action-oriented, whether they think before they speak or lead with instinct and how comfortable they are with complexity and nuance."

She adds that the color "doesn't demand attention. It earns investment without asking for it, which is exactly what the most strategically intelligent people in any room are aiming for."
4. Purple
"Highly intelligent people who reach for purple are signaling openness," notes Lewis. She recommends it for "a negotiation, a creative session or any room where trust needs to be built quickly across differences."
5. Orange
Lewis acknowledges that orange may seem like an unconventional choice, but she says, "I've watched orange transform the dynamic of an entire room."

Are There Specific Colors Linked to Lower Intelligence?
Indeed, as Science Daily reported, a 2010 BioMed Central study found that those struggling with their mental health were most likely to choose gray to represent how they were feeling.
Lewis also notes that black has been linked with lower memory retention, according to a 2022 Heliyon study.
Ultimately, Lewis says that the absence of color "can potentially be working against your brain."
