Enhancing Developer Experience on Setapp
Setapp has grown immensely over the past nine years, expanding from just 60 apps in 2015 to over 280 presently.
Since the beginning, our aim has been to create a platform that empowers both users and developers. We’ve continuously engaged with our community, listened to their feedback, and adjusted our capabilities to improve the experience for both.
Developers are vital for the app ecosystem, and we’re always looking for ways to better support them. In the AI era, having access to different tools and models is a double-edged sword. Powerful tools are great, but juggling access through various integrations can be time-consuming and costly.
From the user perspective, we know that app usage differs from person to person. Heavy app users may want access to dozens of apps, while others may need only a few favorites to get things done.
To tackle both of these issues and provide a better experience on Setapp, we’re introducing a few new changes for developers:
New AI Gateway Functionality
The new AI Gateway offers developers a unified API layer for accessing multiple AI providers – including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, local models, and more – through a single integration. With this, developers can now switch between models or providers seamlessly.
This new approach offers a variety of benefits, including simplified billing through the MacPaw Wallet, ready-to-use SDKs for macOS and web, faster deployment, and more.
New Marketplace Capabilities
Additionally, to continue evolving Setapp into an open software marketplace, we’re enabling developers to offer their applications outside the Setapp Membership, creating new opportunities for a broader range of developers to join the platform.
Users will also have access to new applications available for the first time on Setapp, giving them more flexibility in personalizing and managing their plans all from one place. New applications will be added on a rolling basis, and we’re looking forward to welcoming new developers to the platform and helping them grow on Setapp.
The all-apps Membership has been at the core of Setapp’s identity, and this model is not going away. We love it, stand by it, and know it’s why users joined the platform. To continue better serving our users and partner developers, we’re growing to expand our offerings.
We hope these changes will help us transform Setapp into a more open software marketplace, one that meets user expectations and helps developers find their community.

FAQs (Developers)
Why should I choose to have my app be a part of the Setapp Membership scheme versus a standalone app? What are the benefits? Both models have their own strengths, and what is best for you depends on your app and goals.
Setapp Membership provides exposure to a broad, existing user base, and developers benefit from Setapp’s catalog-driven discovery. Revenue is determined by usage rates.
Single-app distribution is ideal for apps with pricing models or niches that may not align with the Setapp Membership scheme. Developers set their own price and earn per sale. It’s also more ideal for developers whose products are still being fine-tuned.
All developers who partner with Setapp receive the same benefits as on other platforms, including competitive revenue streams, instant access to tens of thousands of engaged global users, a 24-hour expedited review process, first-line customer support, and more.
Can I make my app available both through the Setapp Membership and as a single-app subscription outside the membership?Yes, this option can be explored on a case-by-case basis. To explore this option, please contact the Setapp team.
Will the criteria for app approval outside the Setapp Membership be the same?Yes, the core approval criteria remain the same across both models. All apps must go through security checks and adhere to Setapp’s review guidelines regardless of how they’re distributed. Single-app distribution provides increased flexibility to developers.
Early-stage developers or apps that require more fine-tuned positioning can benefit from this approach by working with the Setapp team. This approach aims to help early developers launch and scale their app from day one on the platform. Similarly, will apps available outside the membership not have upgrades/ads/additional fees?Yes, all apps on Setapp will not have upgrades, ads, or additional fees.
FAQs (Users)
Why should I choose to subscribe to an app through Setapp versus the Mac App Store if it’s available on both platforms?Setapp offers a curated selection of high-quality, secure apps that aim to optimize your workflow. By purchasing/subscribing to an app on Setapp, users can avoid hidden fees or pesky advertisements that may be present on other app stores.
Additionally, Setapp offers more attractive revenue models for developers compared to other app stores, so users can be confident that developers are fairly compensated.
Why should I keep my Setapp subscription? These new models aim to offer users new ways to access their favorite tools on Setapp, allowing them to customize their subscriptions based on their actual usage. Some users may use only a few apps, while others use many.
For heavy app users, a Setapp Membership provides access to dozens of tools for a single monthly price. Additionally, a Setapp Membership enables users to create custom workflows for their daily routines, covering both personal and work-related tasks that one-time purchases or subscriptions may not allow.
Setapp also offers a unified AI subscription feature that offers transparent pricing for AI tools, making them more accessible and cost-effective for users.
What’s the difference between the single-app purchase announcement you made in March and now this announcement? These announcements are focused on expanding capabilities for developers on Setapp. As a user, nothing changes for you.
Users will have the option to subscribe to the Setapp Membership, with access to all apps, or purchase individual standalone apps. All purchases will appear in a user’s Setapp account.
How will I know which apps are available through Setapp Membership vs. those that are available only as single purchases?Currently, users need to navigate to individual product pages to see which are available as standalone apps or in the Setapp Membership, but we understand this can be confusing and cumbersome to navigate.
To ensure users know which apps they can access within each plan, we will separate standalone apps from those available in the Setapp Membership. This will include the option to sort by apps that are standalone or included in the Membership through a toggle on the main page. Standalone apps will also be clearly marked on their individual app pages through a banner.
