Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling has a tough message for parents of kids involved in teen takeovers – police will hold you accountable.
It comes ahead of Memorial Day weekend, when there has historically been an uptick in violence in the city.
Snelling made his first public comments in weeks at a scheduled appearance before Chicago’s City Club in River North, and he took aim at so-called “teen takeovers.”
“These are young people who are coming together to create chaos. That’s their actual goal,” Snelling told the crowd of civic leaders. “If I’m a parent and I have a 12-year-old and they’re in the heart of downtown at midnight and I don’t know where they are, I don’t expect to be shamed. I would be ashamed as a parent to not know that.”
Snelling appeared to distance himself from Mayor Brandon Johnson, who has condemned teen trends, but also blamed some of it on the lack of opportunity for young people. Snelling said the focus should be elsewhere.
“I know we talk about trauma to young people, to teens,” Snelling told reporters. “But what about the trauma caused to other people. So we have to make sure that there’s a level of accountability for those that are going out with the purpose of creating chaos.”
Ald. Brian Hopkins, of the 2nd Ward, says he’s still pushing for an ordinance giving Snelling the ability to declare a time and place, or “SNAP” curfew. He said City Council is working on an ordinance to hold parents accountable as well.
“So I think Snelling might be expressing a little frustration, that we really need the parents of Chicago, all of them, to step up and take responsibility for where their young kids are,” Hopkins said.
Snelling also addressed rumors that he’s set to retire soon. He would not give a timeframe, but said he’s here for the people of Chicago. Hopkins says he would urge Snelling to stay in the job at least until the next mayoral election.
