Red Bull Racing heads to Montreal quietly confident that the development path of its RB22 charger is finally beginning to bend in the right direction, even if the early part of the 2026 season has felt more like a correction than a continuation of dominance.
After years of setting the reference point in Formula 1, the Milton Keynes squad has found itself unexpectedly playing catch-up this year.
No podiums in the opening rounds, a best finish of fifth in Miami courtesy of Max Verstappen, and a general sense that rivals have been quicker to adapt to the new regulatory landscape.
But beyond the results, Red Bull technical director Pierre Waché insists there are signs of something more encouraging taking shape.
Miami offered the first real glimpse of direction
The upgrade package introduced at the Miami Grand Prix marked a turning point in how the team evaluates its current trajectory. Not a revolution, but a necessary recalibration – and one that the technical department believes is already paying dividends.
Waché described the recent progress as a step forward, even if the car is still far from its peak operating window.
"Miami saw us take a clear step forward, with the upgrade package delivering encouraging gains in performance and helping address some key areas on the car,” said the French engineer.
“It highlighted some car weaknesses and room of improvement to extract the overall performance.”
In other words, the RB22 hasn’t suddenly become the class of the field again – but it is at least revealing where the answers might be found.
For a team accustomed to precision dominance, that learning curve is proving just as valuable as outright lap time.
Canada another checkpoint in the RB22 story
Red Bull is not treating its upcoming Canadian weekend as a breakthrough moment, but rather another data-rich step in a longer recovery process. With upgrades still being refined, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will act as a real-world laboratory for the latest configuration.
“Canada will be another good test of the package alongside some minor updates this weekend,” Waché added.
“It has been a positive boost for the team to see the progress translating on track after a lot of hard work behind the scenes, and we expect car development to be made as we head into the European races.”

There is obviously continuity behind the wheel. Max Verstappen returns to racing duties in Montreal after his detour into GT3 machinery at the Nürburgring, bringing his usual intensity back into a season where every point has felt harder earned than before.
Alongside him, Isack Hadjar continues his early run in the senior team, heading into his fifth race weekend with the bulls buoyed by recent improvements.
"Ever since Miami, I've been raring to get back into the car and go racing again,” said Hadjar.
“The Team delivered a much stronger package after the break and we want to continue with that progress going into Montreal. It's another Sprint weekend, so there are lots of opportunities to perform and score points."
The RB22 is not yet the finished product it once routinely felt like – but in the steady accumulation of upgrades, feedback and incremental gains, the team believes its familiar rhythm is starting to return.
Montreal, then, is not about a comeback. It is about confirming that the climb has finally begun.
