The University of Alabama announced Lesley Reid will serve as the University’s Provost on Tuesday. Reid, formerly an associate provost and senior associate provost at UA, has served as interim provost since Nov. 2025.
The search for the new provost began Jan. 2026 after former provost James T. Dalton, who served in the role since 2020, left the University in November to serve as Louisiana State University’s executive vice president and chancellor.
“Throughout her time as interim provost, she has led with thoughtfulness, integrity and a strong commitment to shared governance and open communication, empowering faculty and engaging with students. I am particularly excited about her vision focused on academic mentoring and faculty leadership across UA,” University President Peter Mohler said. “I am grateful for her leadership and look forward to continuing our work together as we advance The University of Alabama’s role as the future-ready flagship.”
The provost is the chief academic officer for the University. Reid will work alongside the president and other members of the executive leadership team to prioritize student success and promote cross-collaboration across the University and the University of Alabama System.
“I am honored to serve The University of Alabama as provost and excited for the work ahead,” Reid said. “With President Mohler, our deans, faculty, staff and students, I look forward to building on UA’s momentum and advancing a future-focused academic mission that expands opportunity, drives discovery and strengthens our impact across Alabama and beyond.”
In addition to her work at the University, Reid is a respected researcher and criminologist whose research on places and risk of criminal victimization has secured her grants from the National Science Foundation.
The search for a new provost was facilitated by the Provost Search Advisory Committee and co-chairs of the committee, Julie Sanford, dean of the Capstone College of Nursing, and Stuart Usdan, dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences. The search committee included professors, faculty members and students and allowed members of the campus community to nominate or recommend candidates.
