ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The city will sell the former School 20 to Young Women’s College Prep Charter School.
That decision was unanimously approved by Rochester City Council on Tuesday. The building on Oakman Street will be sold for more than $1.7 million.
Council did not make a decision Tuesday on whether to sell School 29 to the Rochester Academy of Science, arguing over whether the building should be converted to housing instead.
“I believe that city-owned property should be prioritized for housing in ways that address our most urgent needs, and right now the lack of affordable housing is the thing that is most impacting our Rochester families, including students,” Councilmember Mary Lupien said.
Councilmember Michael Patterson argued forcefully for the sale of School 29, to ensure that it would remain a school and students could attend in September.
“You are, in fact, voting against these children and these families who are here before you now,” Patterson said. “You are voting to make their lives, their educational journey, that much more difficult every day.”
The vote on School 29 was tabled.
