The 25,000 music fans at Petco Park this past Friday, May 15 were treated to a true multimedia entertainment extravaganza from pop superstar Pink for the annual Curebound Concert for Cures, a fundraiser for cancer research.
Mixing music, dance, videos and fireworks, the night was topped with one of the most spectacular aerial acrobatic displays seen anywhere, featuring Pink flying around the stadium, even reaching the top tiers as she sang one of her biggest hits.
This performance was the second time Pink has appeared at Petco Park in the past twoyears; the last time was on September 11, 2024. That show featured pretty much the same set list as this night, but that was just fine with her fans, many of whom did catch her previous concert.
The onstage energy just about matched that of the all-ages crowd, who seemed to know the words to every song. As Pink commented from the stage, this show marked the closing night of her three-year Summer Carnival tour.
The event was the perfect match of artist and cause; Pink’s empowering songs kept apositive message running through the event. One of the concert’s first moving momentscame before the music started, during opening comments from Robin Toft, CEO ofCurebound, the nonprofit that organizes the Concert for Cures.
She asked anyone who had survived or is fighting cancer, along with loved ones, to hold up a light from their phones for a moment, the resulting glow coming from the stadium’s audience showing how much a fundraiser like this is needed.
A brief video introduction from the event’s previous performer, Elton John, preceded Pink taking the stage. Other past performers include Alicia Keys and Ed Sheeran.
The hour and 45-minute show opened strong with Pink emerging from the third base/visitors’ dugout and walking through the joyous crowd, a large number of whom were decked out in flashy outfits, many of them in pink in honor of the night’s headliner.

(Photo by Asilomar Photography)Pink set the show’s warm tone early, as en route to the stage, she took time to enthusiastically greet and high-five fans, hugging many joyful children along the way. It says a lot that the night’s 19-song set kicked off with what is perhaps Pink’s best-known song, “Get the Party Started,” and built up from there.
This was a show with a capital “S.” Each song featured a kaleidoscope of visuals that included not only the screens, but also costume changes, confetti cannons, props such as motorized flamingo pool floaties and dancing lips, with Pink’s good-natured banter keeping it all together.
She was in great voice, giving the audience a show that featured her best-known songs, with one hit after another in rapid succession, including “Raise Your Glass,” “WhoKnew,” “Try,” “Just A Pill” and more.
While the set’s focus was firmly on Pink’s own hits, she did perform three covers. They included a version of Bob Dylan via Adele’s ballad, “Make You Feel My Love,” with her on piano, an adrenaline-charged take on Pat Benatar’s rock classic “Heartbreaker” (segueing out of “Just Like A Fire”) and one of the night’s biggest crowd sing-a-longs, “What’s Up,” originally by 4 Non Blondes.
Though Pink was clearly the star onstage, she also gave her band members plenty of props and opportunity to shine, with longtime guitarist Justin Derrico ‘s guitar work particularly impressive.
The group’s camaraderie was visible onstage. The musicians and dancers seemed to be having as much fun as the audience.
Although there was no encore, to be honest, the night’s closing performance of Pink’s “So What” is basically untoppable, so it’s understandable.
Following “Blow Me (One Last Kiss),” featuring the night’s band Introductions, and “Never Gonna Not Dance Again” with the dancer introductions, Pink went airborne, via harness and cables, singing her 2008 hit. She performed a death-defying series of acrobatic moves, essentially flying at a height that would make Disney’s Tinkerbell envious, even landing on posts set amongst the audience, before taking off and soaring over the fans again.
It was the highpoint of an excellent, well-paced concert that never let up from start to finish, leaving in its wake a happy crowd heading into downtown San Diego, and funds raised for an important cause.
