The Foo Fighters‘ appearance on Hot Ones Versus was extra spicy — not just in terms of the chicken wings, but also because of the fiery stories and opinions Dave Grohl and his bandmates shared.

Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee and Ilan Rubin competed against one another in the competition spinoff of First We Feast’s Hot Ones series in the episode posted Tuesday (May 19). None of the guys fared too badly when munching on the hot chicken (aside from a little bit of sweating and burping), with the frontman’s signature candor also saving him from having to eat a “death wing” on more than one occasion.

For instance, Grohl spared no feelings when asked to name which of the band’s song lyrics he finds the cringiest. “Take your pick. I swear there’s so many I hate,” he said, making the others laugh.

“That song ‘DOA,'” he continued, avoiding the wing-eating penalty in the process. “‘It’s a shame we have to die, my dear/ No one’s getting out of here alive.’ That’s so f–king stupid. That’s one of those I wrote because you guys were like, ‘Dave, sing something, anything.'”

Though Grohl may not be a fan, lots of other people loved “DOA.” The 2005 track reached No. 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is one of the band’s 10 total entries on the chart to date.

Elsewhere in the game, the band members — whose new album Your Favorite Toy dropped in April and reached No. 23 on the Billboard 200 — tackled individual challenges, such as ranking each other’s former bands, naming which group they never want to tour with again and playing musical chairs. Plus, Grohl recounted a hilarious story of a particularly blunt email from David Bowie.

“I asked him to collaborate on something,” he recalled. “It was for a movie soundtrack. He said, ‘That’s not really my genre or thing. I’d love to do something, but I don’t think this is it.’ I didn’t want to bother him anymore, so I just wrote, ‘Hey man, thank you very much, I hope to see you soon.'”

“And I immediately got an email back that said, ‘Well, that’s settled then,'” Grohl added of Bowie. “‘Now f–k off.'”
