Less than a year after leaving his role as president of The University of Alabama, Stuart R. Bell was named the sole finalist Monday for president of the University of Florida.
Bell was unanimously recommended by Florida’s Presidential Search Advisory Committee. The recommendation positions Bell to assume the role for the upcoming academic year, pending approval from the University of Florida Board of Trustees and confirmation by the state Board of Governors.
After serving 10 years as UA president, Bell announced that he was stepping down from the role in January 2025. Following a failed bid to become chancellor of his alma mater, Texas A&M University, Bell emerged as a candidate for president at Florida, a position unoccupied since the resignation of former president and former U.S. Rep. Ben Sasse.
Bell previously served as provost at Louisiana State University and dean of the Lee J. Styslinger Jr. College of Engineering. He was inducted into the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame in 2023, and an endowed chair at the University’s College of Engineering was established in his name.
Rahul Patel, chair of the Presidential Advisory Search Committee, commended Bell in a press release issued by the University of Florida and mentioned Bell’s expertise in leading academics and athletics alongside his breadth of connections to schools in the SEC.
“We are confident Dr. Bell will transition seamlessly into this new role and build on UF’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading public universities,” Patel said. Bell also received compliments from former Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban, who said that Bell was a good friend and supporter of athletics who would “do wonderful things in Gainesville.” In a statement included in the press release, Bell reiterated Florida’s goal of establishing itself as a top-three public university in the country. “I will keep UF focused on the pursuit of truth, knowledge, and excellence while standing strong against ideologies and fads that have no place in the classroom,” Bell said.
