May is National Walking Month. Of course, La Mesa Village is the perfect place for people of all ages and backgrounds to get outside and enjoy the simple yet profound health benefits of walking, and is also a great opportunity to get your steps in.La Mesa Collaborative kicked off National Walking Month by joining the La Mesa Parks and Recreation Department’s monthly La Mesa Walks! program on May 6. During our walk, we learned about points of interest in the Village, including City Hall, the apartments at 8181 Allison, the train depot, and the new Downtown La Mesa District Sign.Every Wednesday morning in June – weather permitting – at 9:00 AM, walkers of all walks of life can join city staff and neighbors for La Mesa Walks, where neighbors and friends can explore city parks and the neighborhoods that make La Mesa awesome.In June, walks include Northmont, Aztec, MacArthur and Highwood Parks. This year, La Mesa Collaborative is focusing on two key areas: food insecurity and youth substance use prevention. Our next Collaborative meeting will spotlight concerns near Dale Elementary.On the food insecurity front, if you or someone you know is looking for a little help filling your fridge and pantry. One organization that is working hard to address food insecurity is ECAssist, by connecting individuals facing homelessness, hunger, and financial hardship with accessible, up-to-date resources and support services tailored to their local communities. One of the newest food distributions in La Mesa is held at the La Mesa Veterans Club, 8118 University Avenue (across the street from the police station). On the 4th Wednesday of each month, from 4 – 6 PM, Feeding the Flock SD provides healthy food for anyone who needs it.
