Three years after Bonnie Bartlett said she once had an “open marriage” with husband William Daniels, the actress is clarifying what really happened during that time in their relationship.
Bartlett, 96, told Daily Mail in a joint interview with Daniels, 99, published on Monday, May 18, that her previous comments about a past time in their 75-year romance were taken to be “more” than it “was.”
“There was never any discussion as to what we were going to do, but in 75 years, the two of you together, you know, it would be abnormal if you … weren’t attracted occasionally to other people,” she explained.
The Little House on the Prairie alum continued, ‘It was non-spoken. Bill and I never sit down and make rules. We never sit down and talk about these things. We just don’t. We just live our lives. And if he’s away for a year, he’s away for a year. Our lives just went on, but we never got unhinged. … But our lives did go in different directions occasionally.”
William Daniels Through the Years: 'Boy Meets World,' Married Life and More
Back in January 2023, Bartlett told Fox News Digital that she and Daniels had a “bit of an open marriage” shortly after they tied the knot in 1951. She noted that this time in their romance was “very painful” for both of them.
“That didn’t work well,” she continued. “And it was a time when people were doing that. It was at a time in New York when there was a lot of sex and a lot of people doing all kinds of things, you know — very free. But I don’t know if there was a lack of commitment a little bit, and that’s not good. So there was a lot of pain connected with any transgression, with any extramarital thing.”
In her 2023 memoir, Middle of the Rainbow, Bartlett revealed that she had “an affair that lasted a few months” with an actor who was “slightly boring.” Meanwhile, she wrote that Daniels had an affair with a producer in New York.
Bartlett said she and Daniels eventually “grew up.”
“Bill and I have moved forward day-by-day and eventually, the days added up,” she wrote in her book. “We’ve been happy together and sad together, and somehow stayed together for seven decades.”
'Boy Meets World’ Cast: Who the Stars Have Dated in Real Life
Daniels and Bartlett are now coming up on their 75th wedding anniversary in June. The Boy Meets World alum told the Daily Mail, “I wouldn’t be with anyone else in my life than this woman sitting next to me.”
Bartlett added, “It just happened. You don’t plan for it. You really don’t plan for it. I’m not at all romantic or anything like that. I’m a big believer in today, you know? And then all of the sudden it’s 75 years. It’s kind of amazing, I must say. ‘It is amazing, especially in our business.”
Ten years after their wedding, Daniels and Barlett welcomed son William Jr. in 1961, but he tragically died 24 hours after his birth. The couple went on to adopt sons Michael, 62, and Robert, 60.
Bartlett told People in 2024 that the loss ended up being the “best thing that ever happened to us.”
“It happened after losing a child, after great pain and sadness, and then we got these two wonderful boys, and they have been a joy the whole marriage,” she said at the time. “I can’t imagine life without them.”
