Alabama softball downs USC Upstate 9-0, advances to super regionals ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Alabama shut out USC Upstate 9-0 in Sunday’s deciding game to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals next weekend.

The Crimson Tide came in strong, putting two runs on the board in the second off outfielder Audrey Vandagriff’s home run.

Keeping the momentum in the third, second baseman Jena Young slammed a home run to right center, bringing in center fielder Kristen White. First baseman Brooke Wells was up to the plate immediately after and added a third home run to Alabama’s tally. Wells is currently three shy of Alabama’s single season record for long balls at 23.

“The goal is just for the next girl to get on, but when she hits a home run, that’s like a double whammy,” head coach Patrick Murphy said. “I asked Jena where she got her power from today, and she said she had a good breakfast, so she needs to repeat that the rest of the year.”

Coming off a standout performance against Belmont the night before, USC Upstate was unable to hold it down against Alabama, coming away with only two hits across seven innings. The Crimson Tide was able to pull away with 10 hits against USCU.

Maddie Drerup opened for USC Upstate in the circle before Ashlyn Brown came in in relief. Brown didn’t provide much relief for the Spartans, though. Across the five innings she played, she allowed 7 walks and struck out only 41% of Alabama’s hitters.

“We knew we needed to stay behind the ball a little bit, let it travel a little more, and eventually we got to her [Brown] as well,” Murphy said.

Alabama displayed its deep pitching bench against USC Upstate, starting freshman Vic Moten in the circle. Moten allowed just one hit from USC Upstate, mimicking pitcher Jocelyn Briski’s one-hit shutout from Saturday against Belmont.

“It’s been our history that if a young lady throws a two hitter on Friday night, the Saturday starter is going to say, ‘Okay, I’ll show you,’ and she’ll either throw a one hitter or no hitter,” Murphy said. “All three [pitchers] were ready to go, they had the opportunity, they took advantage of it.”

Throughout the Tuscaloosa Regional, Alabama has started a different pitcher each game, and all three have secured complete shutouts. This is the second time in program history where Alabama has made it out of the regional without allowing a single run.

Alabama continues its postseason journey next weekend at Rhoads Stadium in the NCAA Super Regional against No. 16 Louisiana State University.
