A fire tore through the grandstand of the former Balmoral Park racetrack on Sunday, and the state fire marshal is now investigating the blaze.
According to a press release from Crete Township officials, the fire broke out at the now-shuttered racetrack just before 6 a.m. Sunday.
That blaze quickly tore through the main part of the building and through the roof, with firefighters quickly engaging in defensive operations to combat the inferno.
Multiple communities sent crews to help put out the blaze, and spot fires were reported into the evening hours, according to officials.
There were no injuries reported among firefighters at the scene.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, and is being investigated by the Illinois State Fire Marshal.
Balmoral Park, which had hosted live horse racing for decades, initially closed in 2015, and then reopened for a short time before closing for good in 2019, according to officials.
