NEW YORK — Part of the Empire State Building is glowing red, white, and blue as the countdown to America’s 250th anniversary quickly approaches.
The president of SAIL4th 250 was there to flip the switch. America will welcome the tall ships of the world to the Port of New York and New Jersey for a universal celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
Chris O’Brien said the shining Empire State Building will help both sailors and New Yorkers navigate the city just as the Statue of Liberty did for immigrants years ago.
“When Ops Sale, our predecessor organization brought the first tall ships to New York in 1964, the Empire State Building stood as the tallest building in New York City. Although that has changed, she still remains the tallest in all of our hearts here,” O’Brien said. “All the New Yorkers can say that.”
The tall ships fleet symbolizes tradition, adventure and international goodwill. The ships will be part of a six-day celebration including concerts and parades.
America 250
The local area is gearing up ahead of America’s birthday.
There will be various events and celebrations happening in Rochester and around Monroe County, including a parade in Gates on June 27, Fourth of July celebrations, and more.
