A graduate student who gained fame for attempting to run every street in the city of Chicago will be allowed to stay in the United States after all.
Joabe Barbosa has become known as one of Chicago’s biggest cheerleaders during his quest to run on every single street in the city, and for a while it appeared his quest would end in June when his visa expired.
This weekend, NBC Chicago’s Jenn Schanz caught up with Barbosa at the Chicago Spring Half Marathon, and Barbosa (who was wearing a bumblebee costume for the race), told the station he will actually be allowed to stay in the U.S. after all.
“I’m going to do another practicum training within my school,” he said. “I’m able to extend my visa (and stay).”
Even though his story will have a happy ending this year as he’ll get to stay in the city he loves, he still plans to undertake his “Chicago best” run on June 14, encouraging the entire city to join him.
“Because June 14th is Flag Day. And so I want to invite the whole city to be there and represent Chicago,” he said.
In the meantime, he’ll try to match for an internship next year, and he said he continues to be blown away by the support the has received from the city and its residents.
“Everyone was so supportive. Everyone held me and DMing me opportunities,” he said. “I also did a GoFundMe to help with the costs of visa reapplication, and that’s going to help me out next year. I felt so much love.”
