Pre-kindergarten teacher LaThanya Campbell of Mary Scroggs Elementary School was named the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Teacher of the Year Thursday at the district’s annual Recognition Celebration.
Campbell has worked in the district since 2021 and is also on its Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Council. She has worked in education for 27 years.
“As a Pre-K teacher, you have the power to make children love school or hate school,” Campbell told the school district. “To mold them into lifelong learners and someone who wants to learn is my driving force every day. Knowing that every day I am teaching and showing love to future generations gives me a sense of pride. Helping a child overcome a challenge or learn something new gives me confidence in my teaching journey.”
As part of her award, Campbell received a $1,000 check from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation.
Several other local teachers were honored during the ceremony. Chapel Hill High School social studies teacher Veena Anglin and Phillips Middle School English teacher Robert Wooten were each finalists for CHCCS Teacher of the Year and received a $500 check. Each individual CHCCS school also recognized its Teacher of the Year with a $100 check.
The district also honored several staff members. Pamela Tedder, a secretary at East Chapel Hill High School, earned the Mary Scroggs Award for Excellence in Providing Support Services, which recognizes an hourly staff member.
Kirtisha Jones of McDougle Elementary was named the CHCCS Principal of the Year and Candace Spinks of Ephesus Elementary was named Assistant Principal of the Year. Click here for a recording of the Recognition Celebration and a full list of honorees.
