The Diamond Heels scored five runs in the second inning, four in the fourth and seven in the fifth on their way to a 17-7 win at NC State Friday in Raleigh. The win, which came in seven innings via the run rule, clinched a ninth consecutive series win for UNC.

UNC led wire to wire, taking the lead on a leadoff home run from Jake Schaffner on the game’s very first pitch. In the second inning, Carolina put the first two runners on base and then loaded the bases with two outs. The first run scored after a fielding error on what could have been the inning’s final out, and UNC made the Wolfpack pay for the mistake. Owen Hull doubled home two more runs in the next at bat, and a Macon Winslow double brought in two as well. UNC led 6-0.
With the score 6-2 entering the fourth, Rom Kellis – making his first start in more than a month – led the inning off with his second home run of the season. Hull and Winslow would pick up more RBI before the inning was over, and Carolina led 10-2.

NC State cut that lead to 10-7 with a five-run bottom of the fourth, but UNC laid the hammer down in the very next inning. After Schaffner singled and stole second base, he came home on yet another Owen Hull RBI knock. Following a Winslow walk, Cooper Nicholson singled home Hull and advanced Winslow to second. With the bases loaded after a hit batsman, Colin Hynek singled to bring home one before Erik Paulsen delivered the night’s biggest hit.

Caden Glauber then held the Wolfpack offense scoreless across the final three frames to secure the run rule win. Glauber earned his eighth victory of the season, tossing 3.2 innings of one-hit relief while striking out three. The freshman’s earned run average sits at 1.96 for the season.
The Diamond Heels are now 43-9-1 overall and 22-7 in ACC play this season, having won seven consecutive games. UNC is also 14-2 in true road games. Carolina is locked in to the No. 2 seed in next week’s ACC Tournament and will look to sweep the Wolfpack in Saturday’s series finale in Raleigh. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
